  1. As many said, the balls is just an example of transfer of energy. In that case, kinetic energy.
    You should check out some videos or consider investing in a FLIR or other thermal imagine device. You would be surprised at what can cause it.   2. I'm not sure but I think that the steel balls make a hole because the steel balls hit each other at such a fast pace they make a spark and the spark burns right through the paper
